ABOUT MARIANNA NAUM

Since 2011, I have dedicated my career to communicating the science and policy of foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics—translating complex regulatory issues into clear, accessible information for consumers, industry, and other stakeholders. My path to this work began at the lab bench, where I was trained as an evolutionary microbiologist and spent my early career immersed in scientific research and writing. What sparked my shift toward communications was the opportunity to participate in projects that extended beyond the lab, most notably being one of four researchers interviewed for the PBS NewsHour segment, “Scientists Track Source of Salmonella Outbreak Mystery.” That experience showed me the powerful impact that well crafted, transparent communication can have on public understanding and trust in science. Since joining the FDA’s communications team, I’ve come to deeply value the principles of clarity, brevity, and openness. These qualities are essential not only for effective public health messaging but also for maintaining trust in regulatory systems. Along the way, I’ve developed strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to lead in high-pressure situations. My scientific background keeps me grounded in evidence, while my communications experience helps ensure that critical information reaches the audiences who need it most. I remain committed to advancing public health by bridging the gap between science, policy, and the people we serve.
