My laboratory studies the mechanisms by which inflammation mediates changes in intestinal physiology and cause a disruption the microbial ecosystem in our large intestine leading to disease. We are particularly interested in the link between detrimental environmental factors (diet and antibiotics), microbiota disruption, and increased risk for diseases such as colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease and IBD. We also study how the pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium takes advantage of the intestinal inflammation to thrive during infection.
