ABOUT MARIAMA NAGBE

I always seek opportunities to help others reach their goals and advance in their academic, professional, and personal lives. My desire to help others is what drew me to the fields of Sociology, Social Work, Higher Education, Management, and Black Studies. Since earning Master\'s Degrees in Social Work and Higher Education, I held a number of roles that allowed me to create value for organizations and individuals. I attribute much of my success to my resourcefulness and creative problem solving ability. My superior problem solving skills are used to conduct the necessary research that designs a plan for achieving long-term, complex organizational goals. Centering Black students, faculty, and staff, my research interrogates the organizational structures that (re)produce racially inequitable learning and workplace environments in undergraduate education, graduate programs, and the professoriate. I organize my research agenda around four functional areas of higher education: 1) academic and student affairs; 2) human resource management; 3) academic knowledge production; and 4) organizational learning and institutional change. Overall, my research praxis thrives through an interdisciplinary context, which sits at the crux between sociology, organizational studies, Black intellectual thought, social work, and higher education. Although I’ve learned and accomplished a lot in my career, there’s so much more I need to know. This is why I pursued a Ph.D. in (Higher) Education Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. Long-term, I aspire to collectively influence generations of scholars, practitioners, instructors, policy influencers, and key cross-sector decision-makers to invest in sustainable community development, entrepreneurial empowerment, and social mobility. I also intend to leverage my community-engaged research and consulting expertise to equip organizational leaders and grant-making strategists with the knowledge and tools necessary to structurally position diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence as institutional imperatives. In the meantime, I look forward to connecting with and learning from my growing professional network.
