About Mariam Thiam
Mariam (MJ) Thiam is an award winning strategic and versatile leader with extensive non-profit, higher education and government experience in arts programming and creative sector initiatives. Since August 2024 Mariam has served as the Curator of Public Programs for the Obama Presidential Center at the Obama Foundation. Within her role she manages the implementation of the Obama Presidential Center’s Public Programming strategy, maintaining alignment with the Obama Foundation’s overarching strategic priorities with meaningful connection to the campus, testing and refining programs\' timeline from strategy to implementation. From November 2018-July 2024 Mariam served as the Director of Performing Arts for the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Mariam helmed a dynamic creative team responsible for orchestrating impactful public programs at Millennium Park, Chicago Cultural Center, Riverwalk, neighborhood locations and venues. DCASE’s Performing Arts programming portfolio included Dance and Theater Residencies, Chicago Gospel Music Festival, Chicago House Music Festival and Conference, Taste of Chicago, Millennium Park Music Series, Blues Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, World Music Festival, SummerDance and Holiday Tree Lighting. Mariam’s acumen extended to supported initiatives such as the Millennium Park Residency Program, Millennium Park 20th Anniversary Initiative, Chicago Band Roster Grant Program, Chicago Gospel Music Festival Ambassador Program, Year of Chicago Theater, Music and Dance initiatives working groups. Mariam’s extensive experience has seen her shape multiple roles in the arts and education sector, demonstrating her profound versatility and highlights her deep commitment to both public service and the arts.
