About Maria Montgomery

Maria has worked in education for the past 28 years. As a military child, she grew up in different states across the country before settling in San Diego. She earned her BA with majors in both Spanish and Psychology from the University of San Diego and studied in Guadalajara, Mexico for two summers. She later returned to the University of San Diego to earn her master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Maria began her educational career as middle school Spanish, English and Social Studies teacher. She continued as a biliteracy teacher in elementary school. Maria then became a mentor teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, peer coach/staff developer, resource teacher for English Learners, program manager, vice principal, and principal. Through her leadership as principal, Kumeyaay Elementary received the following awards: California Distinguished School, Honor Roll Designation, Gold Ribbon Award, Green Ribbon Award, and the Civic Learning Award of Excellence. Maria has also served as a guest speaker for local university programs and a consultant for other schools in California. Currently, as Mentor Principal in San Diego Unified School District, Maria is an instructional Cabinet Member, leadership coach for principals, and leads integrated math student-centered coaching cycles across the district.
