Dr. Noval is an Argentinian chemical biologist and virologist with expertise in emergent mosquito-borne viruses. Her research aims to contribute to the understanding of how alphaviruses, such as chikungunya and Mayaro virus, are transmitted and cause disease. Her lab started in April 2024 and plan to use in vitro and in vivo models of viral transmission and pathogenesis to identify viral and host determinants implicated in viral transmission and in the development of severe long-term pathologies. Specifically, the Noval Lab is interested in understanding what are the consequences of persistent viral RNA in chronic pathogenesis during alphavirus infections, how alphavirus infections affect cardiovascular health, and how transmission routes can affect disease outcomes. Collaborating closely with experts in cardiology, immunology, and genomics, the Noval Lab aims at translating its fundamental discoveries into effective mitigation strategies and therapeutic interventions in the context of future epidemics.
