About Margaret Vanheusen

I am currently a Clinical Analyst at the FDA in the Office of New Drugs (OND). My current role is as the Program Manager for the Advisory Committee Team within OND. My previous projects surrounded evaluating an approach to address drug discovery needs and overcome barriers to success during the biomarkers qualification process. I have previously worked on projects in informatics, focusing on assessing the usefulness of MedDRA based queries during the clinical review process of drug development. During graduate school my research was regulatory science based. My thesis focused on the lifecycle strategies of new drug approvals via the 505(b)(2) application type. My independent research project surrounded project management in the pharmaceutical industry. My clinical research position in the Emergency Department at Albany Medical Center was an exciting opportunity to continue improving my patient interaction skills, while also perfecting my laboratory techniques and expanding my understanding of medicine. In my free time I am involved in research, volunteering and activism in the DMV area. I look for opportunities that will help further develop my understanding of the biomedical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industry. I am especially interested in fostering the education of and mentoring future generations, including the development of a STEM program, aiming to educate children of all ages and backgrounds on bionanotechnology and related fields. I find any opportunity to learn very rewarding; each opportunity holds the potential to discover new passions and interests to pursue throughout my career. My activism efforts range from voter rights efforts to protester safety to involvement in the filing of civil rights complaints. My current volunteer work is with peace keeping organizations, my main roles are in deescalation at protests and as part of a team paired with DC community members who are focused on building a public safety network that can function as an alternative to the police, for the community, by the community. This alternative public safety network will aim to address public health and resource based issues the community is facing, as well as violence interruption in the community. This will include social determinate of health such as mental health needs, job insecurity, food insecurity, overdose prevention training and Narcan distribution. This multifaceted approach, involving the community from the start, is the foundation of mutual aid and is fundamental to the work that I find fulfilling.
