About Marcy Murninghan

For centuries, religious and philosophical teachings have revealed the civic moral obligations of wealth—principles that need to be excavated, elevated, and rewoven into our political economy. For decades, I\'ve worked to apply these—along with our Declaration of truths held to be self-evident, including the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—to current and future challenges, particularly affecting human rights, climate, and infrastructure. I call this magnum opus the \"Equity Culture / Civic Fiduciary\" project. It focuses on civic institutional governance and accountability, particularly through the lens of money and morality. It draws on decades of work in public, private, and nonprofit sectors (a misnomer), with social and economic justice as throughlines. Since October 1983 I\'ve worked in this now-sprawling field of “responsible capitalism,” which goes by many names yet remains largely unknown to the average person. I want to bridge that divide, integrating ancient truths with current concepts and practices, so that financial capital can advance the common goods. This will help revive our democracy by building a political economy rooted in civic virtue. It also strengthens other \"capitals\": human, natural, social, built environment, cultural, even spiritual—because a society\'s net worth relies, in part, on the presence of fairness and hope. We, the people, can fix inequality and build “equity culture” by using the tools of finance to fix the abuses of finance, thus fulfilling the American covenant and democracy\'s promise. The vehicle: an action lab for citizens and tax-exempt institutions—aka “civic fiduciaries”—that leverages billions of dollars in financial assets under management in service to the other \"capitals.\" It also anchors the intertwined ideas of \"equity culture,\" “civic fiduciary,” and \"civic stewardship\" within frameworks of fiduciary duty and civic obligation. Reform capitalism? Yes, we can!
