ABOUT MARCUS GARDNER

After completing my MEng in Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Birmingham, I successfully graduated with a 2:1 (66%). My dissertation was based on the fundamentals of fatigue crack growth resistance in a titanium metal matrix composite with SiC fiber reinforcements. After university, I spent 1-year working as a Laboratory Technician at the University of Bristol, in the Heavy and Light Loads Lab. This required me to maintain, manage, and supervise the ongoing testing of many civil, aerospace, materials, and mechanical engineering projects, across a wide range of mechanical testing machines. This also involved training users, analysing risk assessments and project plans, advising the best approaches for testing, and setting up test machines and additional auxiliary equipment including dataloggers and DIC cameras. I currently work as a Civil Servant for the Ministry of Defence, UK, working on accelerating safe adoption of additive manufacturing. My role is largely based on qualification and certification of additively manufactured parts from a range of processes, mainly DED and PBF technologies. Here I have gained experience in the analysis of availability, reliability, and maintainability, as well as knowledge of metal additive manufacturing processes for use in defense and nuclear fields, and policy compliance surrounding quality and configuration management.
