ABOUT MARCO GRASSO

The core of my research deals with developing new solutions based on big data statistical methods, machine learning and process monitoring techniques applied to smart manufacturing systems. In the last five years I have been working on metal additive manufacturing processes with a particular focus on powder bed fusion technologies, both with laser and electron beam energy sources. One of my main goals consists of achieving first-time-right and zero-defect production capabilities by means of intelligent in-line and in-situ process monitoring and data analytics. To this aim, I\'m developing novel methods to make sense of (big) data streams coming from multiple sensors, including high-speed cameras and infrared cameras, but also new solutions to get rid of a defect once it has been detected. Some applications? Highly regulated industrial sectors, like aerospace and healthcare, where metal additive manufacturing offers huge potentials, but stringent qualification and certification requirements must be met. My research has a strongly applied nature. It is carried out in collaboration with other research institutes around the world, OEMs, small and large enterprises, in the framework of both self-funded and national/EU funded projects. One thing I love of my job is that it allows me to tackle novel challenges every day and to keep my mind in a continuous learning mode, since a successfull research team must be always at the leading edge of knowledge. Teaching and supervising students are key elements of my job, which give me the opportunity to communicate and transfer my passion to other people, but also the responsibility for contributing to the professional growth of tomorrow\'s engineers.
