About Marco Fratus

Envisioning a Digital Twin for Chronic Disease Management.Imagine a smart, always-on system that repairs disrupted feedback loops in the body using biomedical devices-a ‘digital twin’ of ourselves! My work focuses on glycemic regulation in diabetics using wearable microneedle patches for glucose sensing and insulin delivery. By developing the first physics-based model for this technology, I bridge the gap between experiments and simulations, aiming to forecast medical outcomes by exploring:• Dynamic Regulation: How can we prevent diabetic complications before they occur?• Accuracy: How should sensors respond precisely to real-time changes in the body?• User-Friendliness: How can we make treatment more intuitive and less dependent on patients?• Autonomy: How do we manage device degradation and determine optimal replacement times?• Scientific Insight: Can we detect and understand unexpected events in glycemic regulation?• Personalization: How can we tailor treatment to individual variations in glycemic control?• Long-Term Reliability & Autonomy: Can we predict and address device failures to determine optimal replacement times or, better, avoid frequent replacements?• Broader Applications: How can these methods translate to managing other conditions like Parkinson’s?By tackling these questions, I want to build an integrated framework for advanced, data-driven disease management.
