ABOUT MARCELLE HINAND

Marcy Hinand has worked for more than 30 years in foundation philanthropy and the nonprofit arts sector. She has worked on staff and managed long-term grant initiatives and learning networks for the Wallace Foundation, Ford Foundation, and James Irvine Foundation. Marcy has led planning, strategy, and organizational development work for foundation clients including the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the Annenberg and Rasmuson Foundations. She has conducted benchmark research and evaluations including a study of individual donors support for artists \"It’s Not About You It’s About Them\" for the San Francisco Foundation and East Bay Community Foundation; the NEA \"Creativity Connects: Trends and Conditions Affecting United States Artists;\" and an assessment of the Rockefeller Foundation’s 8 year Cultural Innovation Fund. Marcy co-authored two books on cultural participation with Paul Connolly. She has deep knowledge of nonprofit finance and capitalization. Early in her career Marcy managed the first Nonprofit Finance Fund office in the San Francisco Bay Area offering financial technical assistance, loans and grants to cultural organizations for facility projects, in partnership with other CDFI’s. She managed the Ford Foundation’s $40M national arts capitalization program from Marcy was involved in early experiments with community engagement, and has worked extensively at the intersection of the arts and community development, the social impact of the arts, and impact investing in the arts. She has led initiatives centering organizations serving communities of color, and worked strengthening systems and structures to sustain their work in community change and cohesion. This work, as well as long term research in which she participated on the creative sector\'s critical role in community health and wellness, came into sharp focus during the COVID pandemic. Since 2022 Marcy has led strategic planning with clients such as Grantmakers in Aging, specifically to integrate equity practices into their work; and consulted on a collective impact initiative aimed at identifying creative sector living wage, entry-level jobs for BIPOC workers in Los Angeles County. In 2024 Marcy will devote the majority of her time to working with the cultural sector nationally on a multi-pronged approach to increasing climate resiliency.
