About Marcela Angel Lalinde
Marcela is an Environmental Planning Researcher at the MIT ESI. She also serves as the manager for the Colombia Program on Climate, Equity and Sustainable Development, a collaboration among researchers, environmental planning authorities and community groups aimed at reducing deforestation, environmental risk and socioeconomic vulnerability in the Amazonian and Pacific piedmonts. Marcela has a Masters in City Planning (MCP) from MIT and a Summa Cum Laude B.A in Architecture from Los Andes University in Bogotá, Colombia. Throughout her studies and professional practice, she has widened her role as an architect and urban planner to actively participate in the research, design, planning and execution of projects at the intersection of urban development, environmental planning and equity building. Her previous work includes the conceptualization of a new habitation model for oil-extraction regions in the state of Meta, Colombia; the design of a resettlement project to protect a threatened natural reserve while addressing environmental risk and supporting economic development in an informal neighborhood in Bogotá; and the development of a spatial analysis model for the Botanical Garden of Bogotá, the public entity that manages the public landscape, to prioritize landscape interventions in the city, based on social and environmental conditions. Her recent research “Peace Through Parks: The Challenge of Overcoming Social Frictions and Ecological Tensions in the Development of Parks in Post-Conflict Bogotá”, explores the relationships between equity-building and the ecology of public parks in Bogotá, whereby legacies of conflict and forces of social exclusion and fear, in combination with planning paradigms of order and security, end up provoking a simultaneous restraint on biodiversity and human diversity in green open spaces throughout the city.
