ABOUT MARA SCHVARZSTEIN
I am a research scientist committed to investigating biological questions relevant to human reproduction and health. The goals of my research are to understand how genomes are transmitted accurately from one generation to the next during sexual reproduction and to examine the consequences of errors in chromosome inheritance. These are fundamental issues in human reproduction and health, as more than 30% of fertilized human zygotes are aneuploid (i.e. have an abnormal number of chromosomes). Aneuploidy is not only a major cause of miscarriage and congenital abnormalities but is also a contributing factor to tumor progression. Therefore, my research is relevant to reproduction, embryonic development and cancer biology. My research style- I am an ambitious, passionate and collaborative researcher- I am eager to try new techniques or technologies to answer a question- I have a broad background and technological knowledge in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology that enables me to take a comprehensive approach in research- I have an unconventional research style that blends keen critical skills with a creative approach to solving problems. These skills have allowed me to ask inventive but relevant questions beyond the mainstream, and have enabled me to uncover unanticipated findings in frontier areas of research.
