Timo Mappes (18••••76) is working as distinguished professor for the History of Physics with a focus on Science Communication at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. He is founding Director of Deutsches Optisches Museum (D.O.M.). During his studies Timo worked at the synchrotron of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, USA in He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 and received his PhD (Dr-Ing.) with great distinction with a thesis on process development for submicron X-ray lithography in 2006, both at Universität Karlsruhe (TH). After his defense he joined the core-team writing the proposal within the German Excellence Initiative, resulting in Universität Karlsruhe (TH) being promoted to the status of a University of Excellence in 2006. In 2007 Timo received a grant for an independent junior research group at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Wiht 9 PhD-students & Postdocs the performance of his group was evaluated with the mark \"extraordinarily successful\" in 2010. He joined Technical University of Denmark (DTU) as visiting professor in 2010. He was invited as professeur invité to the Université de Franche-Comté in Besançon, France in 2011. He completed his Habilitation in late 2011. Timo authored approx. 200 publications, among those > 50 ISI cited journal papers (h-index 19••••••11 he was founding chair of the Young Investigator Network (YIN), uniting 60 independent research group leaders at KIT. 20••••15 he was employed by Corporate Research and Technology of Carl Zeiss AG. In 2015 he took over responsibility as Senior Vice President Innovation at ZEISS Vision Care, heading global Research & Development and Information Technology with procuration. In July 2018 Timo became full professor and founding director of the German Optical Museum (D.O.M.) to create an internationally recognized research site and interactive museum at Jena.
