ABOUT MALLY SMITH
In September 2025 I joined the incredible team at Creative Edinburgh as Creative Talent Lead. In this role, I will be leading the planning, delivery and evaluation of Edinburgh’s Creative Industries: Pathways to Careers, a new three-year pilot programme supporting recent creative graduates to launch and sustain freelance careers in Edinburgh.I recently completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh Business School, where my research explored the im/possibility of compassion within the modern university. Drawing on Black feminist theory, critical phenomenology, and decolonial thought, I argued for a reimagining of compassion as an emergent, relational, and political practice - one that challenges the institutional violences embedded in academic spaces and creates possibilities for collective survival and care.Outside academia and my professional career, I am deeply rooted in the world of creative expression. Songwriting, dance, ceramics, and collage are core to how I process, make sense of, and stay connected to the world.
