ABOUT MALICA SCHMIDT

I am dedicated to improving human survival and health in extremes by developing sustainable technologies for life support. Currently, I\'m developing a resource efficient portable oxygen delivery system. Previously, I invented a novel water recycling technology (NIMFS - Nature-Inspired, Multifunctional Surfaces) for sustainable life-support, tested in ground-based and microgravity experiments as Principal Investigator during a Parabolic Flight Campaign. They were also tested on the International Space Station by two astronauts as part of the Touching Surfaces experiment. I have disseminated my research in over 60 presentations and exhibitions, leading to 17 national and international honours and awards, as well as Fellowships of the Explorers Club and World Extreme Medicine. I explore these extreme environments myself and was the commander and analog astronaut in two analog missions in Scotland and Iceland, conducting research on a remote Scottish island and inside an Icelandic lava tube. I’m also a tech and scientific diver, high-altitude mountaineer, skydiver, and glider pilot.
