I focus on corporate accountability and broken systems. Our investigation with The Washington Post examined a deeply fraught policy change that determines who gets a life-saving liver. We found that Puerto Rico and seven states - all but one in the South and Midwest - saw a decline in transplants under the policy. These areas have more difficulty accessing health care, lower rates of insured people and fewer transplant hospitals per state. The policy also coincided with the largest number of discarded livers in nearly a decade. We also revealed the change was intentionally engineered by a group of transplant executives, two of whose states are now benefiting greatly from the change.
