About Malek Mitchell
Malek Mitchell is a first-generation graduate of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and Brown University. Mr. Mitchell is passionate about anesthesiology, social determinants of health, health equity, and medical education. Mr. Mitchell is currently a first-year MD candidate at the UNC School of Medicine. Mr. Mitchell is in the medical education scholarly concentration within the MD program which will prepare him to serve as a medical educator and researcher in the future. Mr. Mitchell currently serves as one of the co-presidents of the Student National Medical Association at UNC. Mr. Mitchell aspires to become an academic physician who teaches medical students and conducts health equity research focused on decreasing health disparities in chronic pain management in addition to conducting research focused on increasing diversity within anesthesiology residency and fellowship training programs.

The Future Leadership Project (FLP) is a programmatic initiative that recruits and mentors the next generation of SNMA leaders. Through fellowships within the SNMA structure, the FLP mentors and develops national, regional and chapter leaders. SNMA members are selected for the program through an application process each year. Twenty FLP Fellows gain leadership skills by shadowing, SNMA officers, participating in national and regional programming, and obtaining a more in-depth knowledge about the inner-workings of the SNMA organization.
