   Since UC San Diego Health celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, we are proud of what we have accomplished in our short history and we are excited about our vision for the next 50 years. The School of Medicine\'s 5,011 alumni include Margaret Allen, the first woman surgeon to perform a heart transplant, and Brian Druker, who helped develop the powerful cancer drug Gleevec. From performing the first kidney transplant in our region to recuiting Dr. Helen Ranney as the first woman to chair a department of medicine in the U.S, to pioneering therapies and techniques in cancer, cardiology and minimally invasive surgery, UC San Diego Health has been a pioneer in redefining medical education, research and clinical care. Being a part of UC San Diego contributes to the strength of our research, teaching and clinical care mission. UC San Diego is ranked #1 in the nation for social mobility, community impact and public purpose by Washington Monthly. UC San Diego is ranked 7th in the nation by the Nature Index.
