ABOUT MALA MATTU
I’m currently a Funding Officer at The National Lottery Community Fund, where I have the privilege of supporting charities and community organisations working to make a real difference across the UK. My role involves assessing applications, carrying out financial and governance checks, and presenting recommendations to decision panels - but at its heart, it’s about people. I’m motivated by making sure funding decisions are fair, thoughtful and genuinely rooted in community need.I care deeply about responsible stewardship of public money and about the balance between risk and opportunity in grant-making. I enjoy the challenge of weighing evidence, asking the right questions, and thinking carefully about long-term impact. I’m particularly interested in how funding can shift power, strengthen organisations sustainably, and contribute to wider systems change.Alongside my role, I’m a 2027 Associate at Koreo, where I’m developing my practice through workshops and peer coaching focused on grant-making, leadership and equitable funding. This experience has encouraged me to be more reflective in my decision-making and more aware of the broader dynamics shaping the funding landscape.I graduated with a First Class degree in Politics and International Studies from University of Warwick, where I developed strong analytical skills and a lasting interest in social impact and public value. That foundation continues to shape how I approach my work today, with curiosity, integrity and a commitment to doing things well.At my core, I’m driven by the belief that funding, when done thoughtfully, can be a powerful tool for strengthening communities and creating meaningful, lasting change.
