About Malaena Caldwell
I started my first \"working\" experience by volunteering at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in downtown Detroit at sixteen. It was my first work-like experience because I would have to wake up at 6 am to ensure I would be on time for my 6-hour day from 9am-3pm. I would do that once a week for the next 3 summers. After that, being in college I needed to start taking some responsibility financially and I started working as a Sales Associate at Love Culture part-time the summer after I graduated high school. However, I stopped once school started because I wanted to focus on my first year of college. Then, the following summer in 2019, I worked full-time at Stoney Creek Metropark as a Toll Booth Operator until I left for my study abroad in December 2019. When I came back early in March due to COVID, I immediately found a job working as a hostess at a local restaurant when everything started opening back up. After that, I was hired in at the International Education office for Oakland University helping other students facilitate their study abroad goals as a Study Abroad Student Advisor. This was not only my first time working in an office, it was also the first time my interests and job expectations aligned. It was here where I started to transition from student to young adult starting her career. At the International Education office, I advised students, helped conduct interviews, managed the social media, worked campus events, and helped wherever I was needed. During this time, I also interned at the Oakland Arts Review as the Managing and Social Media Editor, the literary journal that Oakland University supports and prints. In this role, I not only was responsible for all our social media and website, I also oversaw all correspondence between the journal\'s contributors and team. I managed the journal\'s contracts, mailing list, and copy editing process all while reading through submissions as well. I did these positions simultaneously during my senior year and worked there until I couldn\'t any longer due to graduation. Post graduation, I interned at Plante Moran as a Writer- Marketing intern, where I was able to put my passion for writing to full use. It was there I learned how I could apply the skills I gained in my writing classes to the real world by learning how to write for a corporation. Here I helped write for campaigns, shadowed articles, proofread, and more. Currently, I am pursing my dream of living abroad through the TAPIF program where I am an English Language assistant for the next few months.
