About Malaak Jamal

I am HRF’s director of policy and research, overseeing its research and analyzing political regime developments in countries under authoritarian rule. I received a Master of Arts in diplomacy and international relations from Seton Hall University, specializing in human rights, international law, and post-conflict state reconstruction and sustainability. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), where I double majored in sociology and political science with a concentration in international relations. I was awarded FDU’s Outstanding Achievement in Political Science award. I completed my minor in Middle East studies at the American University in Dubai. My opinions have been featured in TIME, The Washington Post, The News Lens, CNN, and Raseef22.

1. Director of Policy and Research

   Human Rights Foundation (HRF)

   Feb 2022 — Present

   The Director of Policy and Research works alongside the Chief Legal and Policy Officer and Chief Advocacy Officer to ensure that the work produced by the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), such as its research, impact litigation, advocacy and campaigns, programs, and events, are in line with its mission statement. This includes, but is not limited to, overseeing HRF’s publication of research and reports, managing its vetting and Oslo Freedom Forum speaker selection processes, and leading and organizing monthly research and team meetings. HRF’s Director of Policy and Research attends events to develop strategic partnerships for its Policy team and takes part in speaking engagements to promote HRF’s work. To advance the organization’s research capacity, the Director of Policy and Research coordinates with the Human Resources team on the recruitment of researchers and the Development team to pitch projects to relevant donors and stakeholders. Other responsibilities and tasks carried out by the Director of Policy and Research are advising on OFF programming and serving as a speaker and session coordinator as well as drafting, editing, and/or reviewing op-eds and articles.
