Designed and taught the course “Water Quality and Public Health: An Introduction to Environmental Research” for the Vanderbilt Summer Academy, a selective academic enrichment program for high school students. Responsibilities included:Developing the full curriculum from scratch, including course syllabus, lectures, lab modules, and interactive content.Leading hands-on fieldwork at Richland Creek, where students conducted in situ water quality assessments including dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, and trace metal testing.Organizing and supervising in-class experiments, lab work, and group projects to simulate real-world environmental sampling and public health assessments.Facilitating student-led presentations and a final capstone project linking environmental science and public health outcomes.Collaborating with faculty and guest lecturers to enhance student learning.Received positive feedback from students and faculty for fostering an inclusive, engaging, and academically rigorous learning environment.Scheduled to teach the course again in Summer 2025, with plans to continue annually throughout my Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University.

ABOUT MAHIR TAJWAR
Third-year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University, advised by Dr. John C. Ayers. My study focuses on diel and seasonal biogeochemical cycles in oligotrophic freshwater systems focusing on carbon and oxygen fluxes, carbonate precipitation/dissolution, and isotopic fractionation. I apply high-frequency field monitoring, advanced geochemical techniques, and ecosystem metabolism modeling to investigate how aquatic systems respond to environmental changes.My broader research interests span environmental pollution, hydrogeochemistry, stream metabolism, and risk assessment. During my M.S. in Geosciences at Auburn University, I studied coastal groundwater contamination and its hydrogeochemical evolution. I have formerly worked on microplastic contamination and groundwater vulnerability. I’ve been a recipient of the Gould Research Grant (GSA), the Dean’s Research Award (Auburn University), and the People’s Choice Award at the 2025 Tennessee Water Resources Symposium. I’m currently specializing in areas related to aquatic biogeochemistry, environmental isotope applications, ecosystem metabolism, and nutrient cycling.
