ABOUT MADISON PHELPS
In the fall of 2019, I matriculated to the Ph.D. program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in Memphis Tennessee, joining their Molecular Systems and Pharmacology track. In just over 3 years I have author 8 peer reviewed publications, with expertise in drug discovery, preclinical drug development, animal models of epilepsy, anti-inflammatory therapeutics, and inflammatory conditions. I am incredibly driven individual with a passion for research in the neuroscience and pharmacology fields. I have been given the unique opportunity to work with amazing chemists to co-develop a patent related to my thesis work, on microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) biology. Here, we have developed inhibitors against the mPGES-1 enzyme, which inhibit the production of the metabolite prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). PGE2 is a potent proinflammatory immune signaling molecule involved in various diseases. It is the hope that our inhibitors will present a novel adjunctive treatment option for neuroinflammatory diseases such as epilepsy or stroke. In 2019, I graduated from Ithaca College with a B.A. in Psychology and minors in chemistry and neuroscience. My previous research experience was involved in understanding the neuronal mechanisms between ethanol and stress, and how that relationship plays out in an animal model. My most recent research was involved in analyzing how mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) effected the neuro-inflammatory immune response in an animal model and how ethanol could potentially alter that response.
