Serving as an Americorps member with the City of Missoula Utility, I am utilizing GIS skills to map stormwater infrastructure such as drywells and inlets, writing grants to promote green infrastructure and community outreach of stormwater issues in Missoula, writing technical research memos, and participating in public outreach to teach Missoulians about stormwater, non-point pollutants, their aquifer, and drinking water. These projects help the city to operate under and above the MS4 permit that limits stormwater discharge by cities.

ABOUT MADISON OLIVIA HINDS
I’m an environmental scientist, researcher, and community educator with a passion for watershed health, aquatic monitoring, and public outreach. With a strong foundation in research biology and years of fieldwork across the Western U.S—including MT, WA, OR, ID, WY, and NV—I bring a well-rounded skill set grounded in both technical knowledge and community engagement.In recent years, I’ve led and contributed to numerous stream and watershed projects. Most recently, I led a national stream survey crew through the University of Montana as part of the BLM\'s Lotic AIM program. I’ve conducted snorkel-based fish surveys, creel interviews, and stream health assessments across diverse ecosystems, gaining deep familiarity with indicators like bank stability, canopy cover, slope, and vegetation composition.My time at the USGS strengthened my skills in science communication and data analysis. As the lead communicator for the Saline Lakes Integrated Water Availability Assessment, I worked with researchers across multiple states to understand and explain how water loss in saline lake ecosystems impacts migratory bird populations. I built public-facing materials, visualized data through AGOL dashboards, and contributed to data releases and GIS-based products.I hold a degree in Research Biology and Environmental Studies from Gonzaga University, where I co-authored peer-reviewed publications on salamander morphology and gained experience in the full research process. I’ve completed additional coursework in Data Science and regularly use Python, R, and ArcGIS to support environmental analysis and storytelling.Outside of formal roles, I’m a dedicated community volunteer and educator. In Missoula, I serve as a River Ambassador with the Clark Fork Coalition, support entomology education through the Salmon Fly Project, and assist with outreach for the Rattlesnake Creek Watershed Group. I’ve also worked as an adaptive ski instructor, trip leader, and wilderness trail crew volunteer with SBFC.Whether I’m collecting field data, leading outreach, or managing project timelines, I bring curiosity, great communication skills, and enthusiasm to every role. I’m especially passionate about local conservation, science education, and protecting Montana’s aquatic resources through hands-on, partnership-based work.
