About Madeline Gitomer

I\'m a lawyer at Democracy Forward, where I represent non-profits and individuals in both litigation and regulatory advocacy. I\'ve brought lawsuits fighting for teachers, students, and academic freedom, I\'ve worked on reading the adminstrateive law tea leaves post-Loper Bright, and I\'ve been fighting back against federal attempts to weaken discrimination laws, privacy protections, and research funding. Recently, my work has spanned issue areas, but my career has largely focused on education and health work.Before joining Democracy Forward, I was a member of the Privacy and Cybersecurity practice at Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C, where I focused on health privacy law, including regulatory counseling. I also maintained a robust pro bono practice focused on protecting reproductive rights, defending against LGBTQ+ discrimination, and expanding access to health care. Earlier in my career, I served as one of Senator Dodd’s professional staff members on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee’s Subcommittee on Children and Families. I helped pass the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and served as Chairman Dodd’s lead education policy staff member in the negotiation of The Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act.While in law school, I received the Edward C. Baker Award for the student with the most pro bono hours in my graduating class and the Penn Law Pro Bono Award for my leadership of the Custody and Support Assistance Clinic. I was also named one of the Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40 by the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association.
