I\'m the founding director of a civic media organization designed with and for the Bay Area\'s Latino and Mayan immigrants. El Tímpano was featured as an \"outstanding innovation model\" in the 2019 Latino News Media Report published by the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and has won multiple awards honoring our innovative approach to journalism. My role has included leading a community-centered design process to map information needs and develop relationships with residents and partners within Oakland\'s Latino and Mayan immigrant communities; launching pilots demonstrating innovative approaches to local reporting that respond to the assets and needs of Spanish-speaking immigrants; managing a team of collaborators and staff; developing an audience of thousands of subscribers to an SMS reporting platform; writing and managing grants; and sharing lessons learned in blogs, conferences, and presentations in the Bay Area and nationwide, as well as mentoring other reporters and news outlets on serving immigrant communities and developing trust with new audiences.
