The UMass Mind Clinical and Research Program, part of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health, focuses on conducting innovative clinical research and developing new intervention strategies to promote recovery, enhance quality of life, and advance health equity for individuals with schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia often face triple jeopardy: a severe mental illness, co-morbid medical conditions, and co-occurring substance use. Additionally, they are at a disadvantage in employment, educational achievement, interpersonal relationships, and other social determinants of health. UMass Mind, part of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health, aims to understand the causes of each aspect of this triple jeopardy and to develop innovative pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to promote whole-person health. Through our research, clinical services, community initiatives, and global efforts, we strive to enhance quality of life and health equity for this patient population. UMass Mind has created the Community Intervention Program with the goal of building a healthier Worcester by offering support and opportunities for community members committed to their mental health and wellness. UMass Mind also maintains long-standing collaborative relationships with several major mental health institutions outside the U.S. involved in research, medical education, and mental health care models.
