ABOUT MADAN KUMAR LAKSHMANAN
I am a researcher and teacher at a non-profit, federally funded government organization. With over 23 years of research and development experience across India and Europe, I specialize in applied machine learning, near-infrared spectroscopy, wireless communication systems, and data science automation. My research philosophy is anchored in a sensitive understanding of real-world problems and the use of scientific and engineering tools to address them effectively. Over the years, I have designed, deployed, and field-tested systems at diverse sites—for example, a near-infrared spectroscopy-based plastic sorting system at IIP Dehradun, a non-contact plethysmography system at Samsung, Noida, and a wireless-enabled moisture transmitter at Marico, Puducherry. Beyond prototyping, I have showcased these innovations at international forums such as GCPRS 2024 and 2025 and Plasto 2025, where they drew recognition for industrial applicability.I hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Delft University of Technology, where my thesis was recognized as the Best Ph.D. Thesis in the Netherlands. My work has been widely cited, particularly in wireless communications, and I have collaborated with organizations such as Samsung Electronics and Nippon Electric Corporation. These experiences have strengthened my ability to work across disciplines, institutions, and industry.Equally important to me is communicating scientific work to clients, funding agencies, peers, and the public. I see dissemination as an extension of research responsibility, ensuring that the impact of science reaches the right audiences in clear and accessible forms. In recent years, my focus has turned toward sustainable technologies, particularly near-infrared spectroscopy for polymer classification and sorting. I have built laboratories for spectroscopy-driven materials characterization, applied machine learning, and non-contact health monitoring. Teaching and mentoring remain among the most fulfilling aspects of my journey, especially on themes like AI for Healthcare, Spectroscopy of Polymers, and Advanced Engineering Mathematics.I strive to create environments where creativity, rigor, interdisciplinarity, collaboration, and joy come together to drive solutions for real-world problems.
