When I was a kid, it dawned on me — it’s way easier to solve a maze by starting at the finish and working backward. At the time, I was told it was cheating; as an adult, it’s very much a life hack. I apply this to every opportunity or problem I encounter: What would the ideal end result look like? So, work backward from there until the first step becomes clear.That philosophy inadvertently guided my career. I met a portfolio manager when I was 10, became obsessed with investing and worked backward to turn it into my career. I’ve spent the last 16 years managing relationships for a national asset manager, but I wanted to do things differently.Too often in business, companies start from “no” — you pitch your boss a great idea, you get a snap “no,” and it\'s on you to convince them otherwise. Much as you should start at the end of a maze to solve it faster, companies should start from “yes” and work out the how second. If it’s a great idea, work backward and make it happen. That “yes first, how second” attitude is why I joined City Different Investments — when it comes to savvy investing ideas for our clients, CDI recognizes great ideas, says “yes” and then works backward to figure out the how.
