I am the Entrepreneurial Lead on an Innovate UK ICURe (Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research) Discover programme, where I am assessing the commercial potential of a method to assess driver safety in people with diabetic nerve damage (DPN).Loss of motor control in diabetic nerve damage is a major risk factor for impaired driving performance, yet there is currently no objective accessible method to assess whether an individual can safely and consistently control an accelerator pedal. With over 2 million people in the UK who have diabetes solving this problem will save lives.Through the programme, I will be engaging with clinicians, medical device manufacturers, automotive safety stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to identify the key challenges in assessing driving-related motor function in people with diabetes. The aim is to refine the value proposition for a device that could support both clinical decision-making and road-safety policy.
