John C. Lyons is an Erie-based filmmaker known for the eco-horror feature,\"Unearth\"(2020), which he co-directed with his partner, Dorota Swies. The film had its World Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, screened at MoMA, and distributed at Showtime. The story is about working-class struggles, the horrifying repercussions sown by shortsighted decisions, and what our children reap from our actions. Unearth stars Adrienne Barbeau and Marc Blucas and is available on various platforms worldwide. Lyons collaborated with filmmaker and journalist Melissa A. Troutman on the Emmy-nominated \"Lake Erie, Our Kin\"(2023), a 2-part documentary for PBS about humanity’s relationship with the Lake. John has also collaborated with choreographer/filmmaker, Corinne Justine, and Seiche Dance Collective on four short film projects focused on women’s and environmental issues: Deinceps Motus (2021), Funeral (2021), Ave Maria (2023), and WAR (2025).Lyons has created the region\'s first immersive theater company, Tethered. Tethered\'s productions feature collaborations between artists and community partners to create thought-provoking performances that combine dance, theater, music, film, and technology to create unforgettable experiences. The 2024 show was about co-dependent relationships. The 2025 show focused on memory & consciousness. New space specific shows are currently in development.He has completed two feature film scripts,\"Unleash\", a sequel to \"Unearth\" with co-writer Shiara Pettis, and \"The Holy Ghost\" and is currently seeking investment to produce both in Erie, Pennsylvania.Lyons served as the Executive Director and Director of Programming for Film Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania (later known as Film Erie) for 15 years (20••••25). He helped bring the Eerie Horror Fest back to life as the Festival Director and Lead Programmer (20••••23). John is a rostered teaching artist for Erie Arts & Culture and Erie Center for Arts & Technology. And a member of Erie Philharmonic\'s board of governors. He also works full-time as the Manager of Client Support Services for the 3 campuses of Pennsylvania Western University where he oversees a team of 12 technology support analysts.His efforts brought attention to local media resulting in Erie Arts & Culture\'s Bruce Morton Wright Artist of the Year Award (2020), Erie Reader\'s 40 Under 40 (2013), Young Erie Professionals Generation-E Leadership Award (2009), Erie Times-News’ People of the Year (2007) Erie Reader’s “Best Filmmaker” Award (20••••17, 2020) and recognition by James Fallows in The Atlantic (2017).
