Within the Momeni Lab, we are using strains of Rhodococcus pyridinivorans and Rhodococcus erythropolis, to degrade mycotoxins, more specifically Aflatoxin B1 and G2, through the use of an intracellular mechanism. This research is geared towards aiding underprivileged communities that are exposed to mycotoxin contamination of food sources.I am also working with environmental isolates collected from around Boston College in order to better characterize the degradation ability of Rhodococcus species as a whole. This collection can now help us identify certain areas of the genomes that are responsible for making these species a good versus a poor degrader of these mycotoxins.
