About Luke Gutzwiller
I have a broad background in pure and applied mathematics, research, education, and theoretical and applied machine learning. I earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2009 and spent 3 years as a full-time lecturer at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL before moving into the tech sector. I have worked on machine learning research and development, with a focus on deep neural networks, along with customer data analysis, predictive modeling, natural language processing, and anomaly detection. At SignalSense I spent 3 years doing research and development work in applied machine learning and statistical modeling in real-time and forensic cybersecurity, analyzing traffic over IP networks to detect hacking attempts and advanced persistent threats and synthesize these detections into useful, manageable reports for human operators. At Mighty AI (formerly Spare5) I worked on: quality control systems for crowdsourced data annotation; deep learning applied to computer vision in object detection, segmentation, and other tasks; and designing and deploying scalable APIs for these systems in AWS. I continued that work at Uber as a senior software engineer, collaborating with researchers and engineers in developing and deploying automation and quality control systems for data annotation at scale.
