About Luke Groff
I am a marine ecologist leveraging modern approaches including aquatic eddy covariance and eDNA gene barcoding to investigate benthic communities in the worlds largest and most successful seagrass restoration site: the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER. My research interests include the contributions of microphytobenthic and infaunal invertebrates to meadow metabolism and carbon cycling and how seasonal drivers impact these benthic communities. Our group uses cutting edge, high-frequency sensors; large-dataset analysis; and year-round field work to dive into our questions. In addition to my work as a benthic ecologist, I collaborate with the Eastern Shore Community College (near our research site) to generate, fund, and host research internship opportunities for students and create curricula related to the local biota. With this group, I lead a research project investigating the best practices for community college capstone course designs and the bidirectional value of science mentorship and collaboration between community colleges and large research institutions.
