ABOUT LUIS E. FERNANDEZ
Global expert on mercury linked to illicit gold mining in the Amazon, with an emphasis on how mercury moves through ecosystems, supply chains, and governance systems. My work combines field research, laboratory analysis, and policy-relevant assessment to support decision-making on mercury exposure, gold traceability, and environmental crime in complex frontier contexts.I am a Research Professor at Wake Forest University’s Andrew Sabin Family Center for Environment and Sustainability and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Centro de Innovación Científica Amazonica - CINCIA, an independent nonprofit research center based in the Peruvian Amazon.Over the past two decades, I have led and supported applied research and institutional partnerships across Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and the broader Amazon region, working with governments, Indigenous organizations, multilateral institutions, and enforcement-adjacent actors. My work prioritizes decision-grade science that informs policy design, regulatory action, and practical interventions to reduce mercury exposure, restore degraded landscapes, and disrupt illicit gold and mercury supply chains.
