ABOUT LUCIAN REYNOLDS

Urban Planning is more than a career or a field of study, it is a method with which we break down complex living systems into interrelated parts so we may improve upon each in a measured way. I am fortunate that my educational and work experience grants me more than just the ability to respect how the parts relate to one another, they allow me to stand in awe of how cities physically manifest the history and values of those who live in and around them. My inspiration to study urban planning came while living in the arid northwest region of Nicaragua as a Peace Corps Volunteer. For more than two years that I lived there I came to appreciate the differences in how the history, military and social needs of the Nicaraguan people drove the organization of housing, industry, transportation, education and healthcare. My subsequent planning career in New York City continuously grants me insight on critical city systems that are necessary to sustain a healthy, growing population of residents. A wave of strong growth and shifting demographics coincides with a growing commitment from municipal institutions to community-based planning and transparency. As a result, urban planning is now a common topic of conversation in the media and community zoning experts are almost common place. It is an exciting time to be a part of the process as a planner and a teacher. However I remind myself everyday that there is a world outside of New York, and as difficult as it is to break outside of the bubble, I maintain an active interest in international development and international conflict resolution. My current focus is in urban environmental policy. This involves analyzing technology, government resources, open data, and food systems through an urban planning lens. This approach requires that I continue to use the tools of urban analysis such as zoning, demographics, population shifts, international and domestic trends, and partnerships to create a path towards the bigger picture.
