About Luca Butera
I’m fascinated by the way data can make cities move smarter. As a UC Berkeley student studying Applied Mathematics, Data Science, and Economics, my focus is on the intersection of transportation, network optimization, and sustainability.I have done work spanning algorithmic graph theory and routing analysis, urban systems modeling, and geospatial data science; at Kittelson & Associates, I developed highly optimized routing implementations and automated network modifiers to represent real-world movement patterns. As a DeCal instructor for the UC Berkeley ASCE Transportation team, I have taught Python workshops on crash and mobility analytics through Berkeley’s ITE DeCal. I also contributed to model reasoning accuracy at Scale AI, refining data science and computer science prompts for large-scale AI training.I’m deeply motivated by the potential of open-source geospatial tools and operations research to create more sustainable, human-scale cities. Whether I\'m optimizing a multimodal network or investigating the behavioral economics behind modal choice, I’m passionate about bringing analytical rigor to the movement of people and ideas.I\'m always open to collaborations in transportation analytics, network optimization, and sustainable mobility innovation.
Experience
Consulting Intern
May 2025 — Present · Boston, MA, US
I am working as a Consulting Intern for Kittelson & Associates in Boston, where I am- Working with computer vision to analyze transportation networks including bike lanes, roads, and pedestrian guideways via satellite imagery and GIS analysis- Building data-based web tools to allow clients and the general public to interface with big data in the context of their local spaces- Analyzing vehicle crash data to assist local and regional governments with their Vision Zero goals. Through this internship, I am learning the role of Data Science and Machine Learning in the space of transportation planning, and gaining experience interfacing with local governments.
