About Lauren Scanlan

Manga editor, MBA, and professional creative, with over ten years of experience working as both project manager and editor in localization and publishing. Throughout my career, I\'ve been dedicated to achieving quality through empowering people to do their best work, which comes from a combination of good scheduling, open and frequent communication, and careful process and style documentation. After becoming a people manager, I completed the People Management Program at Penguin Random House, which has given me a multitude of skills and tools to be the most effective and compassionate people manager I can be. My passion is in transcreation—the ability to recreate experiences in a new market, based on the needs of the project, the original author, and the consumer. Creative localization and translation require an understanding and fluidity associated with transcreation, and involves learning when and where to make appropriate judgment calls to best represent the original intent in the new market. A great example of this is the Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set, for which I was managing editorial, and which won two Eisner Awards—a great recognition of the work my team and I put in. I also was editor of Tokyo Tarareba Girls, which won Best U.S. Edition of International Material-Asia in 2019. Outside of editing manga, I have a deep interest in farming and local food accessibility/food sovereignty. Recently I completed the Whole Farm Planning Course through GoFarm and CSU, with the intent of farming the land I\'m on and teaching my community the skills to do the same. I have experience raising chickens, as well as a whole lifetime of experience caring for horses. In my free time you\'ll find me riding up and down the front range.
