I love fortune cookies. I keep all of my fortunes on my nightstand. Tucked away between sayings such as “Sitting towards the East may bring you good fortune,” and the Kung Fu Panda themed “Po can help you with many things, but if it is a spider, you’re on your own,” is one of my favorite fortunes:You will reach the highest possible point in your business or profession.I received that fortune back in April of 2011, when I was in the Legal Studies program at Anna Maria. I took it literally back then. It’s now 2024. I never went to Law School.There are two things about fortune cookies that everyone should know. The first is what is written in front of you is not the only meaning. Often, the answers we seek are much deeper than what is easily seen and what is presented to us.My business is creating meaning. I make order out of chaos by connecting the dots between seemingly unrelated data sets or ideas in order to demonstrate that there are multiple viewpoints on any situation and, in turn, many solutions.My business is building relationships. I hone in on the needs of the individuals I interact with and the team that I am on so I can provide exactly what they need exactly when they need it. Whether the situation demands I be a friend, a professional, a mentor, a supervisor, an adviser or a resource, I am ready to play my part.Most importantly, I am hungry. Hungry for growth, hungry for knowledge. If I don’t know something right now, I will know it soon. I’ve spent many hours in libraries, coffee shops, backseats in buses and cars, and park benches reading and teaching myself marketing, non-profit organizations, Microsoft Excel, Python, photography, web design, and many other concepts.It’s important to always be hungry. The second thing to know about fortune cookies is that the fortune doesn’t come true unless you eat.Hello. My name is Luis Rafael Frias II. I sit facing the Sun every morning.
