This is a voluntary position. The role of the Associate Hospital Manager is to determine whether the grounds for continued detention under the 1983 Mental Health Act are satisfied. Certain criteria have to be met before the patient is considered for discharge. It is the responsibility of all three panel members to decide if the patient poses a threat to themselves or society if they are discharged. The written and oral evidence from the Consultant Psychiatrist, Nurse, Care Coordinator are vital when assessing a patient\'s mental health. The patient is interviewed by the panel members and collectively a decision is made as to whether the patient is fit for discharge to the community.
