ABOUT LOUIS EDWIN GONZALEZ

My professional interests are in the sectors of medical laboratory diagnostics and mass spectrometry. I am especially interested in the intersections of machine learning and identification of infectious pathogens by mass spectrometry. As a medical laboratory professional and aspiring analytical chemist, I have learned a vast amount about the medical world and how machine/deep learning in chemometrics has pushed the state of the art in medical diagnostics. My experience as a medical laboratory professional in one of the most underserved medical communities in South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, has really given me a unique insight into uncommon and rare infectious diseases and how medical conditions are different within the Latino community. I also gained first hand experience working with commercialized integrated clinical chemistry instruments from Siemens and market leading PCR instrumentation from Biofire and Cepheid.My graduate work has been done under the supervision of Prof. Graham Cooks at Purdue University and involved metabolomic and lipidomic analysis of bacterial pathogens and surrogate organisms of know bacterial biological threats. The end goal is to develop an automated and fieldable biodetection instrument. Throughout the duration of this project, I was able to develop analytical techniques and extraction methods to analyze small biomolecules from spores and utilize machine learning and deep learning algorithms to classify them. The last stage is to develop a full algorithmic method for classifying these organisms from environmental samples. This was a large collaborative effort between TeledyneFLIR Detection, Purdue, and was funded by the Department of Homeland Security.
