ABOUT LOU EDJE

Dr. Edje is a Board Certified Family Physician, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physician and was the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians 2012 Family Physician of The Year. She was the Distinguished Humanitarian Award for the Michigan Medicine Alumni Society and the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian of the Year for UC Health. She started at Michigan State University at age 16 where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology. She was President of her medical school student body at the University of Michigan. She completed her Family Medicine training, with honors, at the Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency where she served as Program Director for seven years. In the course of practicing at St. Luke’s Hospital (SLH) she was the youngest Chief of Staff in the 100 year history of the Hospital and the first female Chair of the Department of Medicine. She enjoyed serving her community on the Toledo Children’s Board, Past President of University of the Michigan\'s Michigan Medicine Alumni Society. She was an active member of the University of Michigan Medical School Admissions Executive Committee, on the Ohio State Medical Association and an Ohio Delegate to the American Medical Association. She served as Member-at-Large on the AMA Organized Medical Staff Section Governing Council. She serves as Chair of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education’s Family Medicine Residency Review Committee, as appointed member by the AMA Board of Trustees. Dr. Edje graduated with a Masters in Health Professions Education from the University of Michigan where she is on faculty in the MHPE Program. She was Designated Institutional Officer for SLH and founding Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency, where she has graduated over 50 board certified physicians. She led 102 graduate medical education programs at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She is the Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education overseeing medical education of 680 medical students, 1300 residents and fellows and faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School and Michigan Medicine. She is also a clinically active Professor in the departments of Family Medicine and Learning Health Sciences. She was elected to the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education where she is currently chair of the nominating committee, overseeing nominations to over 40 medical entities. Her interests include master adaptive learners, competency-based medical education, and health policy.
