About Lori Kaufman

I am a PhD chemical engineer with experience in cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries spanning fundamental research, process development, and scale-up.At Redwood Materials, I develop novel cathode chemistries and precursor synthesis techniques, working closely with technology partners and cross-functional teams to translate lab-scale discoveries into useful product and process improvements. In my current role, I have developed products across a range of synthesis methods, particle sizes, and chemistries, as well as process improvements using innovative chemistry and separation techniques. In addition to my scientific work, I maintain a strategic plan for the team prioritizing high-impact and low-risk projects, communicate with suppliers and technology partners around the world, and provide direction, advice, and encouragement to lab technicians. I excel in organization, having increased productivity in the lab by applying the 5S3F methodology, and persistence, having solved problems that others gave up on.My PhD work at UC Berkeley focused on degradation mechanisms at the cathode-electrolyte interface, using techniques such as off-gassing analysis to understand modes of failure in Li/Mn-rich and Ni-rich lithium-ion cathode materials. At Tesla, I supported battery materials development from lab evaluation through early production processes. My passion for scientific research is fueled by a thirst for knowledge and a drive to solve problems. From discovering why batteries fail to riding my bicycle across an entire country, I pursue my goals with a sense of purpose and relentless forward progress.
