Senior Software Engineer - Alerts @Bloomberg
Senior engineer responsible for the Instant Bloomberg Alerts platform, a real-time messaging infrastructure used by financial professionals globally to monitor critical events and conversations.• Design and build core components of the IB Alerting Engine, a distributed system matching complex user criteria against Kafka message streams processing millions of chat messages daily and generating 300M+ notifications per day with sub-second latency.• Architect distributed validation services using Kafka Streams to perform near real-time alert verification, addressing data integrity challenges in an eventually consistent environment and improving reliability of user-facing alerts.• Lead migration of the alerting platform to Protobuf-based schemas, improving serialization performance, schema evolution safety, and long-term interoperability across services.• Lead delivery of major user-facing capabilities, including Do Not Disturb and Mobile IB notifications, coordinating backend infrastructure and application behaviour across multiple client platforms.• Act as architectural steward for the core IB application, maintaining production stability and guiding changes across a codebase used by hundreds of engineers after team ownership transitioned.• Mentor engineers and interns, providing design guidance and code reviews across the IB ecosystem.

ABOUT LORENZO CINQUE
I design and evolve distributed systems that operate at scale - from real-time data pipelines to APIs and product-facing infrastructure. At Bloomberg, I work on the real-time infrastructure behind Instant Bloomberg Alerts, a system delivering more than 300 million notifications per day with low latency. My work focuses on high-throughput event processing using Kafka and Lucene, schema evolution, and building product-facing features that shape how financial professionals interact with the platform.Over the years, I’ve led architectural redesigns, modernised legacy systems, and acted as a gatekeeper for critical production codebases. I enjoy working across the stack - from distributed systems and protocol design to frontend architecture and internal tooling - especially where technical depth meets real product impact.Recently exploring how AI-assisted workflows can augment complex systems and developer tooling.Particularly interested in distributed systems, real-time data platforms, and infrastructure that powers AI-driven applications.
