ABOUT LORENZO COPPI

I have over twenty years of experience in the application of economics to competition law cases, regulation, and commercial disputes. I am the Co-Head of Compass Lexecon’s EMEA practice and based across London, Milan and Brussels.Having spent a number of years practicing in London, Brussels and Washington, DC, I have worked on a variety of EU, US, and UK mergers as well as on cases involving various allegations of anticompetitive practices under EU, US, and UK competition law, in litigation and regulatory settings. I have also testified in numerous international arbitrations (ICC, SCC, UNCITRAL and ad-hoc arbitrations). My focus has been on merger analysis, State aid, market definition, assessment of market power, abusive pricing practices, energy arbitrations, and the market impact of cartels. My sector expertise includes energy, financial markets, various high technology industries, media and telecommunications, manufacturing, chemicals, retailing, and several consumer good industries. My merger experience includes several important cases: Bayer/Monsanto; Deusche Börse/LSE; Halliburton/Baker Hughes; Deusche Börse/NYSE; Seagate/Samsung. My experience on anticompetitive practices includes monopolization and abuse of dominance cases (e.g, Gazprom, standard-essential patents; ENI, Sun Microsystems v. Microsoft), as well as cartels (e.g. Trucks, LCD, Libor/Eribor, CDS). I have also been involved in several State aid cases, especially in energy and in the restructuring of financial institutions.I am Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges), where I teach Economics of Competition Law, and at the Brussels School of Competition, where I teach Competition Law in Network Industries. I am a frequent speaker at conferences and have published widely on the economics of competition law and regulation.Specialties: Competition Policy, Antitrust, Economics, Arbitration.
