ABOUT LLOYD SEDERER

BIOLloyd I. Sederer, MD Dr. Lloyd Sederer is a former Commissioner of the NYC Office of Mental Health and former Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Sederer served for 12 years as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the New York State Office of Mental Health, the nation’s largest state mental health system. He has been Executive Deputy Commissioner for Mental Hygiene Services in New York City in the Bloomberg administration (the “chief” psychiatrist for NYC), and Medical Director and Executive Vice President of McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA (a Harvard teaching hospital). He has led the mental health disaster responses to 9/11 (as mental health commissioner in NYC), called Project Liberty; Hurricane Sandy (as NYS MH CMO); and other disasters. In 2013, Dr. Sederer was given the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents by the American Psychiatric Association, which in 2009 had recognized him as the Psychiatric Administrator of the Year. He has been awarded a Scholar-in-Residence grant by the Rockefeller Foundation and an Exemplary Psychiatrist award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). In 2019, he received the Doctor of The Year award from The National Council on Behavioral Healthcare (representing over mental health, addiction and social service organizations serving over 10 million patients). Dr. Sederer has published seven books for professional audiences and seven books for lay audiences as well as over 500 opinion and scientific articles as well as film, TV and theatre reviews. He taught medical writing for the lay public at the Columbia Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, for 18 sequential semesters - and continued on with a national educational on-line organization. He founded and directed Columbia Psychiatry MediaHis latest book (2024) is \"Caught In The Crosshairs of American Healthcare\", a true story about the collision of traditional medicine with the ubiquitous and destructive corporatization of American medicine.Dr. Sederer appears regularly on radio and television and has given a TEDx talk about mental illness and the family.
