ABOUT LIZZY ATTREE

I co-founded the Safal Kiswahili Prize for African Literature with Mukoma wa Ngugi in 2012 and I am currently working as Trusts Officer at Terrence Higgins Trust.I\'m a mentor for TLC, Associate Editor of Wasafiri magazine, Literature Tutor at City Lit, and built my own website I have taught Narratives of Change, World Literature & Contemporary London Literature at Richmond American University in London; taught African Migration at Goldsmiths, & have been an hon. Research Associate at Rhodes, SA. I worked as Editorial Assistant on 100 Days, 100 Stories: Rwandan Voices on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, with Jo Ingabire, Zoe Norridge and Eric Murinzi, published by Huza Press (2024). I worked for 4 years at Blake Friedmann Literary Agency, where I was the Office Manager part-time (2019-23). Between 2016-18 I worked as the Fundraiser & Producer of Thinking Outside the Penalty Box, a project focussing on the lives of African footballers who have played for Chelsea & Arsenal, with Nick Makoha, funded by Arts Council England & supported by The Poetry Society. I was UK Director of Short Story Day Africa from 20••••24, supporting the development, funding and publication of Disruption and Captive, and partnering with Catalyst Press. I worked for the Caine Prize for African Writing from 20••••18. I taught African literature at Kings College London in 2015 as a temporary Lecturer. I sat on the Writivism Board of Trustees 20••••18. I published a collection of interviews with authors writing about HIV & AIDS from Zimbabwe & South Africa titled Blood on the Page pub. by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (2010) & also worked as a Visiting Lecturer in the English Dept at Rhodes University, South Africa in 2010. Since achieving my PhD & completing my postdoc at UWC in Cape Town, I have worked as a freelance review & article writer feat. in The Conversation Africa, TLS, Wasafiri, Unbound, LA Review of Books, Africa is a Country, The Guardian, Africa in Words & various journals. I have also fundraised for & managed literary events & tours. I have a number of ambitions including the adaptation of Butterfly Burning by Yvonne Vera to the big screen, setting up an African literary festival that travels from city to city year on year, organising a conference on the cultural or literary responses to HIV/AIDS in Africa, converting my PhD into a book, & setting up reading groups in schools & clinics in South Africa & Zimbabwe.
