Guided by our mission, to share the love of God by surrounding young moms and their children with everything they need to transform their lives, New Moms’ takes a 2-Generation approach to engagement that puts families in control of their goals and unleashes their potential. Together with families, we construct the foundations of wellbeing by strengthening brain architecture, incorporating early childhood development supports, building pathways to and preparation for education and employment, and expanding positive social networks and access to community resources. It’s not easy: living with chronic scarcity can be traumatic and can result in toxic stress. In the absence of supportive relationships, poverty can disrupt brain development and can take a toll on long-term individual and community health. 97% of the young families that come to New Moms are experiencing extreme poverty, and want to write a new story for their future. However, brain science research indicates that adolescence is a crucial period of time for brain development and an adolescent’s environment can catalyze immense changes – and that becoming a parent is like getting a permit to update the wiring of the brain! For young moms whose home or school experiences didn’t build in strong skills, becoming a new parent offers a chance to remodel the brain architecture and unlock opportunity. New Moms exists to boost this crucial and transformative period of time in a young mom’s life. We partner with young moms as they take sensible steps towards making their goals a reality and construct strong foundations for the future of their family and community.
